lemons and oxys

often, drug users, people with addictions and mental illness are marked with meanings like hopeless, insane, less than, sick, scum, unhealthy and worthless while ‘normal’ people are considered healthy, productive and valuable. addiction, drug use and mental illness are invisible until disclosure or markers identify the body as such. consumption and consumerism are considered productive behaviours to maintaining a ‘healthy’ economy while the psychological pressures of necessitated material acquisition create a dislocation from real emotions: we consume and consume until we are totally disconnected from ourselves.

these photos represent the invisible: addiction, drug use, mental health issues and consumption. in these photos, there are photos of drug addicts, drug users, people with mental illness and ‘normal’ people while the item each person is portrayed with may not be congruent with a specified marked body.

who do you think is the addict, the drug user, the person with mental health issues or the ‘normal’ person? how is your identification of these bodies produced? are addicts, drug users and mad people only considered sick because they are not considered valuable consumers to this economy? are ‘normal’ people only considered healthy because they are constant consumers? what is legitimate consumption? how does your idea of the ‘sick’ person get produced? how does your idea of the ‘sick’ person give you privilege? who is the ‘real’ sick person?
